🏆 Giulia Vozzolo has gained the 2024 Concurso de fotografia Cientifica

PhD researcher Giulia Vozzolo has just gained the CONCURSO DE FOTOGRAFIA CIENTIFICA 2024 organized by POLYMAT centre. In the photo Giulia with prof. Maria Paulis.

The photo: To Gel or Not to Gel: the Luminous Dilemma in the pH Alcove

The image shows the formation of twisted ribbon-type nanofibrils of a Low Molecular Weight Gelator (LMWG), consequent to the irradiation of the sample with visible light. A photoswitch was added to the solution rendering it photoresponsive.

Below you can see the winning image, congratulations Giulia!

On Friday, April 12th, a group of 4th year high school students from Sopelana Institute (Bizkaia) visited SardonLab.

Last year, they received an award for one of the best projects at the Zientzia Azoka by Elhuyar, and the prize included a guided tour of POLYMAT. In the project they are working on, they will use 3D printing with PLA for manufacturing parts, focusing on plastic recycling and reuse (MORE INFO).

The visit consisted of two parts:

i) 3D printing led by PhD students Oihane Varela and Jon Ayestarán

ii) Chemical recycling with PhD student Marta Mestre and Dr. Ion Olazabal.

We also had the collaboration of Dr. Nora Aramburu (Processing) and Robert Aguirresarrobe (Rheology).

Thank you for your visit!

The event was organized and coordinated by Dr. Mónica Moreno (Project Management) and Dr. Marta Ximenis (Organocatalysis).

📖 Prof. Haritz Sardon has received the 2024 Polymer Chemistry lectureship

Congratulations to our professor Haritz Sardon for receiving the 2024 Polymer Chemistry lectureship!

This award, now in its tenth year, honours an early-career researcher who has made significant contribution to the polymer field. The recipient is selected by the Polymer Chemistry Editorial Board from a list of candidates nominated by the community.

Haritz Sardon has been awarded with several awards including the ACS Macomolecules Young Investigator Award, Excellence of Young Researcher in Chemistry Award by the Spanish Royal Society (2021) and the Excellence of Young Researcher in Polymers Award by the Grupo Español de Polímeros (2020). His overall research aims to prepare new functional polymeric materials using sustainable polymerization processes. Specifically, his investigations involve the use of green polymerization processes such as monomers from plastic recycling, reagents from renewable sources or the use of less hazardous organocatalysts.

🏆 POLYMAT has been accredited as María de Maeztu unit of excellence

POLYMAT has been accredited as María de Maeztu unit of excellence!

This is a prestigious accreditation that is obtained in a call open to all research centers in Spain.

The application was led by Prof. David Mecerreyes and the other senior researchers involved were Prof. Alejandro J. Müller, Prof. Aurelio Mateo-Alonso, Prof. María Paulis, Prof. Haritz Sardon, Prof. Marcelo Calderón and Prof. Juan Luis Delgado.

This achievement has only been possible due to the commitment and fantastic work of all the members of POLYMAT, because all aspects of our activity were evaluated. We are really proud of all the work of our whole team!
